In 1950, the SV/Ost was founded by a secession from the SV. This split certainly had political reasons, the BRD was founded in May 1949, the GDR in October.

The men and women around Hans Hirsch have laid the foundation stone for the breeding of DSH in the territory of the GDR.

To put this straight to the point, there is no GDR Shepherd, there are related to these dogs, DSH, that were bred in the territory of GDR.

Between 1950s and mid fifties, the same dogs were used on both sides for breeding. Up until the early sixties, with some effort and relationships, it was possible to use dogs from the SV area. Since 1968, Bernd Lierberg was also employed by Kurt Himpel several times. Later, SV Blood officially joined us via dogs from Czechoslovakia. I also think the creative breeder used other ways.

So over the last 40 years, there was a blood connection to the SV. The services and equality of the service dog breeds in the SDG and their SZGs had a great influence on the breeding in our breeding area. I personally see this as an advantage when it comes to the service dog. Werner Dalm, who led and shaped the German Shepherd in these 40 years here in the East, sees it differently.

His book, “The breeding of the German Shepherd in the former GDR” can only be recommended, there is nothing better on the subject❗️

The photos are from the original newsletter, founding SV East 1950, it was published in the format monthly, but only one year. 1951 every two months, then it was completely stopped. The paper was probably used for the SED propaganda. Later the SZGs found their place in the newspaper “Der Hund”.

In conclusion, important for our breeding was the breeding program, NZB, ZTP, körung, WZ, capturing and evaluating results, etc.

… and it wasn’t extremely commercial yet.
